Allyn Lyons

I am a public relations and communications professional with experience in university and non-profit sectors. I have written for The Uniter, Reverie Review, The Projector, and Working Draft Magazine. I am a former host of CKUW 95.9 FM’s People of Interest.

I completed the Creative Communications Joint Degree program between The University of Winnipeg and Red River College. At U of W, I took courses in the politics, ethics, and culture stream. I was on the Dean’s List in 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 at The University of Winnipeg.

I have experience working for not-for-profit organizations like Dalnavert Museum and Visitors’ Centre, Manitoba Theatre for Young People, the Victoria General Hospital Foundation, and University of Manitoba Press. I’m hoping to work somewhere in arts and culture, environment and sustainability, or anywhere with the goal of making the community a better place.

From 2021-2024 I wrote the column “One Green City” for The Uniter. I outlined environmental issues facing Winnipeg and proposed different solutions that could help make our city greener.

Some things I’m proud of:

For my major writing assignment, I wrote a feature article on a local activist group, Manitoba Youth for Climate Action. I discussed the role of social media in activism/slacktivism and creating communities both online and offline: Like to Strike

I was an ambassador for a youth engagement group called RISE under Apathy is Boring. Over the course of 22 weeks, my team and I worked on creating a podcast on the theme of gender inclusion, focusing specifically on inclusive sex ed. I hosted our first episode on consent and healthy relationships and edited all four episodes in Adobe Audition. Listen to Not Your Mother’s Sex Ed here.

My friend Sarah London and I have organized two virtual comedy shows to raise money for Willow Place and Main Street Project. Together, we’ve raised over $1,300. You can read the Winnipeg Free Press article about our first show here.

I helped write and research information about Sir Hugh John Macdonald’s involvement in the 1919 General Strike for a virtual tour of the museum. Learn about Sir Hugh’s involvement in the 1919 General Strike here: Virtual Tour of the Dalnavert Museum
